Cicadas on Lantau Island ( HK )

I went for a brief hike yesterday, and recorded some videos with the D300s of the Cicadas which were out in all of their buzzing glory. The video is processing on Youtube now, hopefully it processes into an HD video. I used a reverse 50mm 1.8 lens to record the cicada in a macro style way, but its rather hard to hand hold a camera and a lens. By the way the video is a bit unpleasant perhaps for some people, but these are just insects and nothing to fear.

I hope you like my educational voice over!

Tai Kok Tsui Temple Festival

The temple festival has two parts, a day and a night component. The day component is a parade of performers, musicians ( school bands ), and a dragon. The night component involves a LOT of black lights ( UV lights ) and a 500 foot dragon, which gets lit up by the black light and glows. Make sure you get a spot for the night event, and do not shoot with flash, but increase your ISO instead.

Why am I saying this, its because I am a proud owner of a new D300S SLR.  The video is shot by the d300s, using a Tokina lens, very wide!

Here is a video and some photos:

IMBD.com UN-blocked in China

Well, IMDB is available in China once again. Today I am able to access it and look at the Oscar nominations and all of the other great stuff a westerner will miss while  living in China.

Why was it blocked ( see below )… as to why it was unblocked, there are a few ideas, I am thinking that the “anti-Chinese”  or “controversial” movies that are on imdb.com on second review by the China Government were found to be not that “contraversial” or perhaps the reasons are more mundane, such as the need for the Politburo staff in China to check up if their favorate director and stars made into the Oscar Nomination… however, The most devious reason is Karate Kid ( the link to youtube trailer is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvHEm4-QB2o ) and it now stars Jacky Chan, whose fame and adoration in China would probably be enough to unblock imdb.com! In China he is as mighty and powerful as, oh lets say Chuck Norris in the west!

Although many people who are living in China do cringe and the “ censorship ” myself as a former citizen of the ( former ) Soviet Union, I can see how the Chinese government sees blocking resources that can be considered sources of propaganda and unrest that can destabilize a country of billions.

Back to the topic of this post. Here is some proof of the ability to get to IMDB, I hope it is not just a temporary lift on the ban ( with hope in my heart I checked facebook, but that is still blocked).

IMDB is UNBLOCKED IN CHINA! (2010-2-4)

How and when did IMDB.com get blocked? :

After January 7/8th 2010 the IMDB ( www.imdb.com ) had been blocked to all access from inside China via most of their ISPs ( http://www.labnol.org/internet/china-blocks-imdb-website/12335/ ).

Dragon Centre Catwalk Show (hot girls!)

Here is a teaser photo, from the Dragon Centre (in Kowloon) Fashion Catwalk Show from today. All I can say is great show! Did not use a Canon today. Instead the Nikon D200, no flash, all with 1 lens too, 18-200 ED VR, wow I am blown away by the Nikon.

I will add more photos later today/tomorrow.

Pak-Fa Russian 5th Generation Fighter

Maiden flight, and Some Photos – Completely China and Asia Unrelated, other than the flight took place at Komsomolsk on Amur which is IN ASIA! :)

Photos below taken with a Canon 20D, go Canon, old camera was probably used to hide the secrets of the aircraft that a 5D would have revealed.

The current prototype is Sukhoi’s T-50[10] and the PAK FA when fully developed is intended to replace the MiG-29 Fulcrum and Su-27 Flanker in the Russian inventory and serve as the basis of the Sukhoi/HAL FGFA project being developed with India.[11][12] A fifth generation jet fighter, it is designed to directly compete with the American F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II. The T-50 performed its first flight January 29, 2010.[13][3]
